Frequently Asked Questions

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 is short for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1. It is a natuarlly occuring hormone that effects your metabolism and appetite.

What does GLP-1 do in the body?

  • Regulates blood sugar: It helps your pancreas release insulin when glucose levels rise and suppresses glucagon (which raises blood sugar).

  • Slows digestion: GLP-1 delays gastric emptying, meaning food stays in your stomach longer—this helps prevent blood sugar spikes.

  • Reduces appetite: It acts on the brain to increase feelings of fullness and reduce hunger.

Am I a candidate?

In order to be considered for Empowered Health's medically guided weight loss program you must have a BMI of 30 or greater with no underlying conditions OR a BMI of 27 or greater with at least one weight related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes or dyslipidemia. If you are unsure if you qualify, you may always come in for a consultation with our registered nurse.

How does it work?

GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking the natural GLP-1 hormone your body releases after eating, and they target multiple systems to help regulate blood sugar and appetite. Here's how they pull off this metabolic multitasking:

 Brain

  • Suppress hunger signals by activating GLP-1 receptors in the hypothalamus.

  • Increase satiety so you feel full sooner and eat less.

  • Reduce cravings for high-calorie foods.

 Pancreas

  • Stimulate insulin release when blood sugar is high, helping cells absorb glucose.

  • Suppress glucagon (a hormone that raises blood sugar), preventing unnecessary glucose release from the liver.

Stomach & Digestive Tract

  • Slow gastric emptying, which delays how quickly food leaves the stomach.

  • This leads to steadier blood sugar levels and a longer-lasting feeling of fullness.

 Liver & Muscles

  • Reduce glucose production in the liver.

  • Improve insulin sensitivity in muscle tissue, helping the body use glucose more efficiently
